Most common questions about guitar lessons answered for you.
I have experience teaching a wide range of ages and abilities, and I will gladly teach anybody between the ages of 6 and 106 (though if you're 106+, do send an e-mail and I'll see if we can sort something out).
I certainly do. I am able to offer guitar lessons via Skype & Zoom for students wishing to continue their lessons or someone who has decided to pick up a new hobby.
I teach the majority of my guitar lessons from my home studio on Neville Street, York, YO31 8NP. Also, I am a mobile guitar teacher which means I visit my students to deliver lessons so you can learn the guitar from the comfort of your own home in the York area. Get in touch for more information.
That is very much dependent on the student. I'd be very pleased to build the lessons around your tastes and interests. Of course, there are certain foundational skills that ought to be learned, but always with the intention of making music that you enjoy.
Usually, I would suggest starting out with a nylon string or steel-string acoustic guitar with the option to branch into electric playing later. Many of the skills you will learn are easily transferable between the two anyway, though there may be techniques particular to one or the other that you would like to learn as you advance. I am personally more of an acoustic specialist - having studied under acoustic virtuosos Nik Harrison and Jon Gomm - though I have also played electric guitar in rock, jazz and ska bands. Ultimately, I will happily teach either, and it depends on the goals of the student.
I would suggest purchasing a guitar before your first lesson, though I will have something you can use if need be. In my experience, it is sensible to begin with a more basic instrument; it will be absolutely fine in serving its purpose, and you will always be able to 'upgrade' later as your abilities develop. If you would like any advice or direction on which instrument to buy, I can offer suggestions by e-mail according to your budget. You can also find out more information about guitar stores in a special article on Guitar Shops in York. Any other resources or equipment will be recommended if/when they would be useful to you, depending on what's being covered in the lessons.
This is a question I often get asked and the answer lies within your own ambition. If you are looking to be able to play basic rhythm-based songs, the likes of Oasis, Ed Sheeran, Jack Johnson then it might only take you three to five months to really nail these types of basic acoustic songs - for guitarists that are looking recreate the sounds of Jimi Hendrix then it can take many years of honing your skills to play speedy guitar solos of many of the greats.
